Editorial Profile

Galerija SC, the exhibition space of the University of Zagreb Student Centre at Savska 25, has operated since the early 1960s as one of Croatia's most significant platforms for new and experimental artistic practice. From its first years it aligned itself with conceptual art, environments, happenings and international exchange, and throughout the 1960s and 1970s it published its own bulletin, Novine, documenting exhibitions, actions and the theoretical debates that grew up around them. Located in the Trnje district, the gallery has kept a firmly non-commercial, experimental character, working outside the market circuit of established galleries in Zagreb and defining itself instead as a laboratory for research-driven, process-based work.

Since 2005 its programme has been run within Kultura promjene (Culture of Change), the Student Centre's interdisciplinary cultural framework that also houses Teatar &TD, Kino SC and the MM Centar. Exhibitions are selected through an annual open call welcoming solo and group shows, performances, workshops and curatorial proposals, with a clear bias toward young authors working across the space's interdisciplinary range. The practices shown lean toward conceptual approaches, installation, photography and time-based media, often by graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Within the contemporary art scene of Zagreb, it holds a distinct place beside the city's public art institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, remaining one of the few sustained venues where early-career artists can test ambitious, process-based work outside a market-facing context.

1 Cubic Meter is an editorial map of contemporary art venues and exhibitions, built city by city to document where contemporary art is produced, presented, supported, and encountered.
