Sommer Contemporary Art Gallery in Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv Port · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in Tel Aviv in 1999 by Irit Fine Sommer, Sommer Contemporary Art has developed over more than two decades into one of the most internationally connected galleries within contemporary art in Tel Aviv. Operating from its current premises at Hatnufa 6 in the Kiryat Hamelacha neighbourhood — a developing creative hub on the southern edge of the city — the gallery has maintained a consistent dual mandate since its founding: supporting the international visibility of Israeli artists while bringing significant international figures into dialogue with local audiences. This outward-looking orientation distinguishes it within the broader gallery landscape of Tel Aviv, and is reinforced by an institutional model that fosters long-term relationships with artists across career stages, from emerging to established, alongside an ongoing dialogue with art institutions through collaborative exhibitions, publications, and public programming.
The curatorial programme spans a wide range of practices — painting, video, sculpture, and installation — with a roster that has included Yael Bartana, Yehudit Sasportas, Adi Nes, Guy Ben Ner, Ugo Rondinone, Gregor Hildebrandt, Tal R, and Daniel Richter, among others. Since relocating to its current space, the gallery has placed particular emphasis on site-specific productions and large-scale projects developed in direct response to the architectural and historical character of the building, alternating these with more intimate exhibition formats. A second space in Zurich extends the gallery's European reach, and regular participation in international fairs — including Frieze London — reflects its sustained engagement with the global art market. Sommer Contemporary Art functions as one of the primary commercial bridges between Israeli artistic practice and international contemporary art discourse.
