Sommer Contemporary Art Gallery in Tel Aviv

Editorial Profile
Sommer Contemporary Art is a commercial gallery founded in Tel Aviv in 1999 by Irit Fine Sommer, making it one of the most longstanding and internationally connected galleries operating within contemporary art in Tel Aviv. The gallery's dual mandate — promoting Israeli artists on the international stage while bringing significant international figures into the Israeli context — has remained consistent across its history and successive locations. Currently housed in a new space on Hatnufa Street in the Kiryat Hamelacha district, a neighbourhood increasingly central to the city's creative infrastructure, the gallery has embraced site-specific productions and large-scale projects developed in dialogue with the building's architectural and historical fabric. Its program spans a broad range of media and practices, with particular weight given to painting, video, photography, and installation. Represented artists include Yael Bartana, Yehudit Sasportas, and Guy Ben Ner among Israeli practitioners, alongside international figures such as Gregor Hildebrandt, Thomas Zipp, Ugo Rondinone, and Tal R — a roster that reflects a curatorial positioning between critical conceptualism and materially grounded artistic practices.
Sommer Contemporary Art maintains a Zurich salon presence, extending its reach into the European collector and institutional network, and has participated regularly in major international art fairs including Frieze London, consolidating its visibility well beyond the regional art scene. The gallery also sustains ongoing dialogue with museums and institutional partners, with represented artists appearing in significant biennials and institutional exhibitions internationally. Among galleries in Tel Aviv, it occupies a distinctive role as a bridge between local artistic production and international circulation, sustaining long-term artist relationships across career stages — from emerging practitioners to mid-career and established figures.
