Asia Art Center (Taipei) Gallery in Taipei
Neihu · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Established in 1982, Asia Art Center operates two spaces — its Taipei flagship in the Neihu district and a second venue inside Beijing's 798 Art Zone — together totalling roughly 2,500 square metres of exhibition surface. The program is historically anchored in postwar and twentieth-century Asian modernism, building a sustained curatorial line around Chinese abstract painting and contemporary ink while tracing the trajectories of pivotal regional movements: Taiwan's Fifth Moon Group and Ton-Fan Group, Japan's Gutai and Mono-ha, Singapore's Nanyang School, and Indonesia's Bandung School. This historical scaffolding positions it as a long-standing reference point within the contemporary art scene in Taipei, offering a sustained reading of how Asian modernism developed its own visual languages alongside Western movements.
Alongside this historical core, the program extends into international contemporary practice, incorporating artists from the United States, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and Latin America. Exhibitions span painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, sound, and tapestry, with curatorial threads addressing humanism, feminism, and critical responses to digital technologies. Recent solo presentations such as Chen Shu-Xia's "After Dilution" and Kuo Yen-Fu's "Cramps" reflect a parallel attention to mid-career Taiwanese practitioners and to broader pan-Asian dialogues. The gallery's international footprint is consolidated through regular participation in Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze Seoul, ART SG, West Bund Art & Design Fair, and Art Collaboration Kyoto, placing it among galleries in Taipei with the most consistent regional fair presence. Its Neihu address anchors the program in a quieter, more institutional quadrant of the city, slightly removed from the denser commercial clusters elsewhere in Taipei.
