Don Gallery Gallery in Shanghai
Xuhui · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Don Gallery is a Shanghai-based contemporary art gallery founded in 2007, with a program shaped around the development of Chinese contemporary art and the long-term support of artists working across different generations. Located in Xuhui, close to the West Bund’s dense concentration of museums, galleries, and art-fair infrastructure, it occupies a position within one of the city’s most active cultural zones. Its stated focus on the “symbiosis of Chinese art ecology” is reflected in a program that moves between solo exhibitions, project-based presentations, and collaborative institutional contexts. Recent and recurring exhibitions have included artists such as Zhang Ruyi, Zhang Yunyao, Wang Ningde, and Lu Song, whose practices suggest an interest in painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and conceptually driven approaches to image, material, and urban experience. Within contemporary art in Shanghai, the gallery functions less as a broad commercial platform than as a focused space for sustained artistic development.
Its relevance also depends on how it connects local artistic production to international circulation. Don Gallery has participated in art fairs including Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze London, Paris Photo, Paris Internationale, West Bund Art & Design, and ART021, placing its Shanghai-based program within a wider network of Asian and European visibility. This international activity does not detach the gallery from its local context; rather, it reinforces the role of galleries in Shanghai as mediators between the city’s expanding contemporary art infrastructure and a broader market for Chinese contemporary practices. Through this balance of local commitment and outward-facing participation, Don Gallery contributes to Shanghai’s increasingly articulated gallery ecosystem.
