Galeria Vermelho Gallery in São Paulo
Consolação · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in São Paulo in 2002, Galeria Vermelho has developed as an established but structurally experimental gallery within contemporary art in São Paulo, operating from Consolação with a program centered on post-conceptual practices and contemporary Latin American artists across different generations. Its roster includes figures such as Claudia Andujar, Carmela Gross, Dora Longo Bahia, Carla Zaccagnini, Rosângela Rennó, Carlos Motta, Iván Argote, André Komatsu, and Lia Chaia, indicating a sustained interest in practices that move between photography, installation, painting, video, performance, public space, and political or archival research. Rather than presenting contemporary art as a fixed medium-based field, the gallery’s program often treats exhibition-making as a place where visual art intersects with cinema, dance, literature, music, publishing, and social discourse.
Within the ecosystem of galleries in São Paulo, Vermelho occupies a distinctive position because its activity extends beyond the conventional commercial gallery model. Projects such as Verbo, its long-running performance art festival, Tijuana, its platform for printed art and artist books, and Sala Antonio, a screening room dedicated to moving-image practices, reinforce a broader curatorial structure around experimentation and circulation. This makes the gallery especially relevant in a city where institutional, commercial, and independent formats frequently overlap. Its presence in international fairs including ARCOmadrid, Art Basel Miami Beach, Frieze, ArtRio, arteBA, and SP-Arte also situates its program beyond Brazil, while remaining closely connected to São Paulo’s dense network of artists, museums, foundations, and public-facing contemporary art spaces.
