Galeria Leme Gallery in São Paulo
Butantã · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Galeria Leme opened in November 2004 in the Butantã district of São Paulo, occupying a concrete building purpose-built by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The space was expanded in 2012 into a larger structure, also designed by Mendes da Rocha, comprising two distinct exhibition areas totalling approximately 600 m². This architectural context — raw, austere, spatially demanding — has consistently shaped the kind of work the gallery commissions and presents, favoring projects conceived with ambition and site-awareness. Since its founding, the program has pursued a deliberate balance between Brazilian and international representation, spanning multiple generations and a wide range of media: painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and site-specific work. Among the international artists on the roster are Candida Höfer, David Batchelor, Elisa Sighicelli, Frank Thiel, and Zilvinas Kempinas, while the Brazilian contingent includes figures such as Luciano Figueiredo, Evandro Carlos Jardim, Luiz Braga, Germana Monte-Mór, and Heloisa Hariadne, alongside younger voices like Felipe Rezende and Gabriela Giroletti.
A consistent thread in the gallery's curatorial positioning has been the introduction of international artists to Latin American audiences, often offering them a first solo presentation in the region. This orientation toward cultural mediation extends to the gallery's participation in SP-Arte, the main platform for galleries in São Paulo and one of Latin America's most significant commercial and discursive art fairs. The gallery also runs Projeto Situ, an initiative dedicated to site-specific productions, further signaling an investment in the expanded possibilities of the exhibition format beyond the conventional gallery show.
