The 2021 decision to drop the name Witte de With — a reckoning with the colonial associations of its seventeenth-century namesake — reset the terms on which Rotterdam's leading contemporary art house now operates. Under Gabi Ngcobo, who took over Kunstinstituut Melly in 2024 after Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy's six-year tenure, that critical inheritance has translated into research-driven, discursive programming attentive to diasporic and southern positions: recent commissions and solo presentations by artists such as donna Kukama and Felipe Mujica, several developed with curator Rosa de Graaf, treat the exhibition as an extended inquiry rather than a finished display. A few streets away, TENT has pursued a sharply local mandate, foregrounding Rotterdam-based practitioners — Robert Glas's installation on punishment and justice, curated by Anke Bangma, is characteristic — before relocating from the Witte de With building to a neighborhood base at Coolhaven. The independent end works to other rhythms: at Brutus, Joep van Lieshout gives makers license to occupy industrial volumes, hosting immersive projects and curatorial wildcards like Ine Gevers's AUTONOMOUS. Across these venues, commissioning and sustained engagement matter more than blockbuster turnover.
