Founded in 2007 in the 20th arrondissement before relocating to the Marais in 2011, Semiose has developed one of the more distinctive curatorial identities among galleries in Paris, situating its program at the intersection of underground culture, citation practice, and aesthetic subversion. Operating from a substantial space on rue Quincampoix — steps from the Centre Pompidou — the gallery is directed by Benoît Porcher and Frédérique Buttin Valentin and represents around twenty artists working across painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. Its curatorial thesis is coherent and consistent: a commitment to forms born at the political, social, and geographical margins, where collage, appropriation, and détournement converge around questions of taste, cultural hierarchy, and the circulation of images. Established presences such as Françoise Pétrovitch and Anne Neukamp sit alongside younger voices like Xie Lei and Laurent Proux, while the Zimbabwean sculptor Moffat Takadiwa signals the gallery's broader geographic ambitions. Participation in Art Basel extends its visibility well beyond the Paris contemporary art scene, and the gallery has developed a parallel publishing activity through Semiose éditions — a house that has produced over a hundred titles including monographs, artist books, and an ongoing magazine.
