Galería Sur Gallery in Montevideo
Punta Carretas · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in 1984 by Jorge Castillo and Martín Castillo and now directed by Martín Castillo, Galería Sur operates from a modern space in La Barra and is one of the longest-running programs in the Río de la Plata region. Its curatorial direction articulates a continuity between the modern Latin American canon and current production, anchored in particular by the legacy of Concrete and Kinetic art on both shores of the river. Within the broader landscape of galleries in Punta del Este, it occupies a distinct position: an established commercial space that also functions as a research-driven platform, with sustained attention to archival recovery alongside contemporary representation.
The roster threads together historical figures such as Joaquín Torres García, Pedro Figari, José Pedro Costigliolo and María Freire with mid-career artists including Eduardo Cardozo, Marcelo Legrand and Sebastián Sáez, across painting, sculpture, video and installation. Cardozo's participation in the Uruguayan Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024 reflected the gallery's sustained editorial commitment to the artists it represents. The space contributes substantially to the wider ecosystem of contemporary art in Punta del Este, producing publications around figures of the Río de la Plata avant-garde and coordinating projects with regional museums. Its international footprint is built through steady participation in arteBA, Art Basel Miami Beach, SP-Arte, ArtRio and Este Arte, where its presentations consistently bridge Uruguayan and Argentinian modernism with the contemporary Latin American art circuit.
