Nadi Gallery Gallery in Jakarta
Puri Indah · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in September 2000 with an inaugural exhibition of works by Heri Dono, Nadi Gallery is one of Jakarta's established mid-career and contemporary art venues, operating from the Puri Indah area in West Jakarta. Its name — drawn from the Indonesian word for artery or vein — signals an institutional ethos centered on sustaining the pulse of current developments in Indonesian art. The gallery works consistently with independent and guest curators, scheduling at least six exhibitions per year, and combines a commitment to artistic development with an explicitly collector-oriented framework. Its program spans solo and group presentations, with a clear emphasis on painting alongside more conceptually driven practices.
The exhibition history across galleries in Jakarta reflects a range of positions within Indonesian contemporary art, but Nadi's roster places particular weight on mid-generation figures whose practices engage painting, drawing, and mixed-media installation. Artists such as Agus Suwage, Ugo Untoro, Handiwirman Saputra, Eddie Hara, and Goenawan Mohamad — the latter a major literary and intellectual figure who also works visually — have all been presented in solo contexts, pointing to a program that values critical and cultural depth alongside aesthetic range. The gallery has extended its reach beyond the domestic scene, participating in Showcase Singapore in 2008, and continues to position itself as a platform for dialogue between artists, critics, curators, and collectors, including through workshops and book publishing initiatives.
