Gajah Gallery Jakarta Gallery in Jakarta
Karet Tengsin · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in Singapore in 1996, Gajah Gallery is one of Southeast Asia's longest-running commercial galleries, with spaces in Singapore, Yogyakarta, Manila, and a Jakarta venue in the Karet Tengsin area of Jakarta Pusat, housed within the Casa Domaine complex. The Jakarta gallery operates as a dedicated exhibition space within this wider regional network, presenting solo and group shows drawn from a roster that pairs established names with emerging artists from across the region. Its program centres on painting, sculpture, and installation, with a sustained investment in Indonesian artistic practice — figures such as Ibrahim and Uji "Hahan" Handoko Eko Saputro reflect the gallery's dual attention to mid-career artists and younger voices working within contemporary art in Jakarta.
This commitment to production is reinforced by the gallery's Yogya Art Lab, a foundry and experimental studio established in Yogyakarta in 2012, where artists work alongside local artisans on sculptural pieces in alternative materials that often circulate through the Jakarta space. Internationally, Gajah Gallery shows regularly at major fairs including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art SG, Art Jakarta, and Art Basel Miami Beach, situating its Jakarta venue within a transnational circuit rather than treating it as a standalone outpost. Within Jakarta's expanding gallery landscape, the space adds to the growing number of galleries in Jakarta operating to international standards, while anchoring Gajah's long-term engagement with Indonesia as a central site for the production and presentation of contemporary art in the region.
