Gajah Gallery Jakarta Gallery in Jakarta
Karet Tengsin · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded in Singapore in 1996, Gajah Gallery is one of Southeast Asia's most established commercial galleries, operating across multiple locations including Singapore, Yogyakarta, Manila, and its Jakarta outpost in the Karet Tengsin district of Jakarta Pusat. The Jakarta space, housed within the Casa Domaine complex, functions as a dedicated exhibition venue within the gallery's broader regional network, staging solo and group shows that draw from a roster spanning both established and emerging artists from across the region. The program maintains a consistent focus on painting, sculpture, and installation, with a particular investment in Indonesian artistic practices — among the artists represented in Jakarta, Ibrahim and Uji "Hahan" Handoko Eko Saputro reflect the gallery's dual commitment to mid-career figures and younger voices navigating the currents of contemporary art in Jakarta.
At the international level, Gajah Gallery participates regularly in major art fairs including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art SG, Art Jakarta, and Art Basel Miami Beach, positioning the Jakarta space as part of a genuinely transnational circuit rather than a standalone venue. The gallery has also produced travelling exhibition projects and collaborated with institutions such as the Singapore Art Museum, underlining its ambition to situate Southeast Asian art within a global critical conversation. Within Jakarta's evolving gallery landscape, the space contributes to the growing density of galleries in Jakarta operating at an international standard, while also anchoring the gallery's ongoing commitment to Indonesia as a key site for the production and promotion of contemporary art in the region.
