Laufer Gallery in Belgrade
Savamala · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
Founded by David Laufer in 2014, the gallery operates from the Savamala district, a former industrial quarter that has played a defining role in the recent transformation of contemporary art in Belgrade. It presents a tightly curated roster of artists from Serbia, the wider region, and beyond, with a programmatic emphasis on figuration that has come to characterise much of the post-Yugoslav generation. Working predominantly with painters but also with photographers and installation artists, the space positions itself as a bridge between the local scene and an international circuit of collectors and curators, an orientation reinforced by the founder's parallel base in Zurich, from which solo and group projects are also organised.
The program has consistently engaged with practices that respond to memory, displacement, and the visual languages emerging from the recent past of the former Yugoslavia. Long-term collaborations with Dragan Bibin, Vesna Pavlović, Boogie, and Lazar Nikolić have anchored the exhibition calendar, complemented by projects with figures such as Adrian Klajo, Nina Simonović, and Sofija Ječina. The gallery has represented the Serbian scene at international platforms including the AIPAD Photography Show in New York and the BIENVENUE Art Fair in Paris, and has staged collaborative exhibitions in Geneva and at the German Embassy in Belgrade. Within the broader ecosystem of galleries in Belgrade, it occupies a particular niche, smaller in scale than institutions in Belgrade such as MoCAB, yet attentive to the curatorial dialogue between the city and the wider European art market.
