Contemporary Art Institutions in Beijing

A useful entry point is the 2025 survey "It Always Sounds Somewhere" at the Inside-Out Art Museum, which traced sound practice across mainland China and Hong Kong since the 1990s — a project emblematic of how this Haidian institution, under director Carol Yinghua Lu, treats the exhibition as an instrument of art-historical reconstruction rather than display, recovering undocumented or marginal episodes of recent Chinese practice. That research orientation marks one pole of the city's institutional programming. At the other sits UCCA, whose calendar under Philip Tinari — who led the museum for fourteen years before leaving for Hong Kong's Tai Kwun in early 2026 — alternated internationally circulated retrospectives, such as Peter Eleey's 2024 staging of Luc Tuymans, with sustained attention to Chinese artists including Cao Fei, Xu Bing, and Yang Fudong, and to younger painters like Chen Ke, whose Bauhaus-themed exhibition drew directly on 798's East German industrial design lineage. What runs across both registers, and arguably defines serious institutional work in Beijing, is a curatorial disposition: a preference for thesis-driven, historically literate exhibitions over the spectacle that the city's scale and visibility might otherwise encourage.
