House of Chappaz Gallery in Barcelona
Gràcia · Contemporary programme
Editorial Profile
House of Chappaz operates from the Gràcia district as a contemporary art gallery rooted in the Mediterranean corridor that links Valencia and Barcelona. The project emerged in July 2021 from the transformation of Espai Tactel, the space founded in Valencia in 2011 by Ismaël Chappaz, after a Barcelona venue had been opened in 2018 with Oriol Armengou and Ferran Mitjans of the design studio Toormix. Since 2024, operations have been consolidated under a co-direction of three at a single Catalan headquarters, sharpening the focus of a programme that positions itself within the avant-garde register of contemporary galleries in Barcelona while remaining attentive to emerging Catalan and Mediterranean voices.
The curatorial direction favours experimental and conceptual practices across installation, video, sculpture, photography and time-based media, with a roster that includes Eli Cortiñas, Vicky Uslé, Raisa Maudit, Anna Moreno, Carles Congost, Fito Conesa and Antonio Fernández Alvira, among others. Recent solo presentations such as Cortiñas's "If It Walks Like A Duck..." and Maudit's "A Spiralling Ascent. Looking back from the End" reflect a commitment to research-driven, politically inflected projects that travel beyond the commercial frame. International visibility is sustained through uninterrupted participation in ARCO Madrid since 2017, alongside appearances at Art Brussels, Paris Internationale, UNTITLED Art Miami and the local LOOP Art Fair, anchoring the gallery within both the contemporary art scene in Barcelona and a wider circuit of European and American fairs. Membership in ART BARCELONA and the Consortium of Spanish Galleries further situates the space within the structural networks supporting contemporary practice in the city.
